Meeting point

Good news! You can get picked up from a hotel or train station, just email us the details. Don't worry if you don't have the address yet, you can pass it onto us later.

On the dust of the desert and mud of the steppe, the Japanese off-road MPV provides comfort and safety for your trip. These 4x4 vehicles are specifically tuned for the rough off-roading that's inevitable when traveling in the wilds of Mongolia. They provide ample space, air conditioning and are well maintained, while offering good luggage space, seat belts and speed.

At Tour Mongolia we believe that a good guide is essential to the enjoyment of any trip. Your guide will be English speaking and hand picked by us to suit your itinerary and requirements. Each guide is personally briefed on all elements of the trip. You will be sent guide details in the confirmation document prior to your tour.

During your journey you will be staying at authentic ger homestays in guest gers alongside nomadic families. Alternatively, camping in tents is also possible. Gers are equipped with beds, linen, stove, table and chairs and solar powered lightning. Showers are not available, with homestay facilities being naturally basic.

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

DAY 2, 3, 4

You will be picked up from a pre-arranged Ulaanbaatar location at 9 am. Jump in the vehicle with your guide and head west to the northern part of Gobi. On the way, you will stop briefly at horse racing fields west of the city and once more to visit Khar Bukhiin Balgas, interesting remains of an ancient fort used by nomadic tribes dating back to 10th century. Then it’s onto Gurvanbulag, where you will be staying at a ger homestay at the community of local herders. Enter the ger and experience the local hospitality – you will have the opportunity to sample homemade curds, milk tea and airag (fermented mare’s milk) and perhaps also help with preparation. In the afternoon visit the nearby ancient burial sites in the surrounding hills. Or, if you are up for it, head with your guide to the nearby sand dunes, a 5 km / 1hr hike away. In the evening enjoy a home cooked dinner of Khorkhog or similar countryside fare and spend some time socializing with your nomadic hosts over home-made vodka, or alternatively enjoy stargazing in this incredible location – then settle into your ger for the night.

You will spend the next three days in the saddle, on the horse journey through the valleys, steppes, and sands to Ugii Lake. The nomadic trails will take you via the burial stones at the sacred Gurvanbulag valley, over sand dunes, stunning passes, past rivers, and down through the lush green valleys and alluvial meadows to Lake Ugii. Around 5-6hrs a day will be spent in the saddle, with options for additional forays on horseback or on foot from camp locations. On each night you will be staying alongside local nomadic families and you will have a chance to camp nearby or sleep inside the family gers – experience their hospitality and learn about their culture. You will notice that their gers are smaller in size and a lot more basic than the one you stayed in the community camp, but follow the same ancient customs where every furnishing in ger has its place. Lake Ugii lies in Arkhangai amid pastures of nomads and features very rich bird life. On arrival to Ugii Lake take a stroll around the shore and look out for the abundant bird life on display. There are also opportunities for boating and fishing, boats and fishing equipment is available for rent from one of the camps in the summer months.
