Meeting point

You will be met by your guide and driver upon your arrival at the Ulaanbaatar airport, just email us the flight details. Don't worry if you haven't booked your flights yet, you can email those to us later.

On the dust of the desert and mud of the steppe, modern Land Cruiser or similar SUV provides comfort and safety for your trip. These 4x4 vehicles are specifically designed and tuned for the rough off-roading that's inevitable when traveling in the wilds of Mongolia. They are fast and powerful, with ample space for two, and your courteous chauffeur not only has 2 decades of off-road driving experience, but is also a skilled mechanic.

At Tour Mongolia we believe that a good guide is essential to the enjoyment of any trip. Your guide will be English speaking and hand picked by us to suit your itinerary and requirements. Each guide is personally briefed on all elements of the trip. You will be sent guide details in the confirmation document prior to your tour.

During your journey you will be staying at two of the top ger lodges in the country as well as at the best two hotels. Cottages at the lodges provide views across the open steppe and desert, with hand crafted traditional furnishings and top end en-suite amenities. Facilities at the 5 star hotels include Jacuzzis, in-door pools, cinemas and characterful restaurants.

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

Your guide and driver will meet you in the arrivals hall at Ulaanbaatar Chinggis Khan Airport. Transfer to the hotel and check into your room. The plan for today is quite flexible, as arrival times will influence things, and you may want some downtime to relax. You may also need to sort out exchanging money and other practical things. If you arrive early, there will be a morning visit to the Gandan Monastery – enter the temples, including that of the Migjid Janraisig with its huge golden Buddha statue. In the old temple complex listen to the chanting ceremonies which happen mid-morning. If you arrive around noon, we suggest meeting your guide in the hotel reception at 14:30 for a leisurely walk across the impressive Sukhbaatar Square to visit the National History Museum with its well-laid out informative displays showcasing the country’s fascinating past. Afterwards, walk south towards the city’s main park, and enjoy an intimate performance of music and dance by the Tumen Ekh ensemble at a small theater. A welcome dinner at one of our favorite Mongolian restaurants rounds off your first day in Mongolia.

Today you fly to the Gobi Desert. Usually, Dalanzadgad flights depart very early, around 6 am, so you will have packed breakfast prepared earlier in the hotel. Your guide will pick you up from the hotel around 4:45 and will fly with you. After landing, drive to Yol Am – we always advise an early visit to avoid other people, to maximize the chance of seeing wildlife before the heat of the day comes, and for the best light for photography.

Park up at the head of the valley and keep a lookout for birds of prey and ibex on top of the rocky outcrops above you as you wander down into the gorge. The walk here typically lasts around 1-2 hours depending on distance ventured and one’s individual pace. As you walk further down the valley the steep rock faces close in and the stream that crisscrosses the path disappears under sheets of ice – there may not be much ice in the summer months but there should be some. After you have explored the area, continue driving through the rocky tracks – look out for herds of white-tailed gazelles and demoiselle or white-naped cranes. Stop at Khavtsgait to explore the petroglyphs. Walk up a rocky outcrop and search the surrounding rocks for ancient engravings that dot the area. You will be surprised by how many there are one can spend a good half an hour exploring and discovering. From this vantage point, there is a fantastic view over the surrounding plains.

Then continue to your eco-lodge located near the Gurvansaikhan Gobi National Park and after dinner, enjoy an evening of stargazing.

After a leisurely breakfast, drive a short distance into the Moltsog Els sand dunes where you’ll explore on foot. You will also have the opportunity to visit a local camel herding family. Enter their ger and enjoy local nomadic hospitality and sample homemade delicacies. In the afternoon head out to the Flaming Cliffs to admire the orange glow at dusk. It was here in 1923 that Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews and his exploration team from the American Museum of Natural History found the first nest of dinosaur eggs. Enjoy an exploratory walk around the spectacular sandstone formations. We advise spending up to an hour and a half strolling around this paleontological wonder – both atop the cliffs and down on the valley floor. Afterwards, return to your lodge for dinner and enjoy your night in the Gobi.

Then it’s onto Hustai – drive in on a safari to see the Takhi horses, herds of deer and other wildlife. You may want to combine the trip with a walk in the park to get closer to the animals for better photography – your wildlife guide will be on hand to assist. Drive to your resort in time for dinner and settle into your luxury cottage for the night.

However, you will now pass through the main valley to get away from the ger camps and settle into the Terelj Hotel, which is the best hotel in Mongolia. In the afternoon you can be active or relaxed as you wish – you can ride a horse, visit a nomadic family living across the river, hike in the nearby hills or simply enjoy the hotel facilities, which include spa treatments, an indoor pool, private cinema and excellent, secluded restaurants.

Then visit the nearby Gyrocopter pad and take a 10-minute flight over the Chinggis Statue and Khan Khentii hills and enjoy panoramic views from above Mongolia. Upon landing back on the ground it’s back to Ulaanbaatar, arrive on time for a farewell dinner in one of the capital’s best restaurants and settle in your hotel room for the night.
