This private 3-day tour is fabulous for those with limited time to enjoy the best of Mongolia’s nature and culture. An unforgettable adventure, the trip features hikes to temples and ruins, Mt. Bogd Khan summit, horseback riding practice, spectacular wildlife, hiking in the scenic surroundings and the remarkable Chinggis Khaan statue. Your nights are spent away from the city in guest gers next to authentic nomadic families, giving you the best chance of experiencing the Mongolian culture and traditions first hand, meeting and socializing with the nomads over the home-made meals and fermented mare’s milk.
Spend a full day in each of the three of the national parks conveniently located within a short drive from Ulaanbaatar: Gorkhi-Terelj, Hustai, and Bogd Khan.
VISIT TURTLE ROCK, ARYABAL TEMPLE, RIDE A HORSE AND STAY NEXT TO LOCALS IN A GER IN TERELJ NATIONAL PARK
After meeting our guide at 09:30 am board the vehicle and head east to Terelj National Park. The drive will take 2 hours (60km). On arrival, stop first at the sacred rock that looks like a turtle. Then venture up to a hilltop Aryabal meditation temple. After coming back down, drive through Terelj for 10km off-road to a nomadic family living nearby. On arrival drink milk tea, have homemade lunch and learn about the nomadic traditions and the way of life. In the afternoon, if you are up for it, mount a horse and set off with your guide for a ride to the nearby hills. No horse riding experience is necessary – Mongolian horses are small and we match horses to riders – you should be comfortable quickly and your guide will be there to assist. Return to the family’s encampment and in the evening enjoy a nomadic meal of Buuz (steamed dumplings) of khorkhog (mutton seared with hot stones) – you can help with cooking if you wish. In the evening there will be time to socialize with your nomadic hosts over homemade vodka made of fermented mare’s milk, or alternatively for some incredible stargazing of the clear, Mongolian sky.
Overnight stay in an authentic guest ger next to a local family in Terelj. Lunch and dinner are included.
SEE THE CHINGGIS STATUE AND TRACK WILD HORSES IN HUSTAI NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, say goodbye to your hosts and drive south for 1 hour (35km) to the imposing Chinggis Statue complex. The statue is 40m high and is located where, according to legend, Chinggis Khan found the golden whip. Explore the local museum inside and climb up the staircase to the viewpoint on top, from where there are scenic views of the Tuul River and the Khan Khentii mountains. Then board vehicle again for the journey east to Hustai, stopping for lunch in a local eatery on the way. You should arrive at the nomadic family where you will be staying tonight at around 4 pm. Enter the family ger and experience the local hospitality and rest a bit, then venture by vehicle into the park to see the wild Takhi horses and track wildlife. You may see wild deer, foxes, and other animals, and there will be plenty of opportunity for photography. At dusk return to your ger for dinner.
