Transport

Our vehicle of choice on this tour is the UAZ. These beasts of the east were born for the wilds of Mongolia. Fun, functional & practical, they feature a large wheel base, high ground clearance, large surround windows, ample luggage space, a strong heating system, and a flexible, sociable layout. Our guests fall in love with these indomitable vehicles and our fantastic team of drivers.

Guide

At Tour Mongolia we believe that a good guide is essential to the enjoyment of any trip. Your guide will be English speaking and hand picked by us to suit your itinerary and requirements. Each guide is personally briefed on all elements of the trip. You will be sent guide details in the confirmation document prior to your tour.

Accommodation

During your journey you will be staying alongside nomadic families and eagle hunters in their guest gers, as well as in centrally located hotels in Ulaanbaatar and Ulgii. Gers are equipped with beds, linen, wood stove, table and chairs and the facilities are quite basic, with loos and showers are only available in hotels.

ULGII – AIMAG MUSEUM – LOCAL MARKET
You will be picked up by our driver from your hotel lobby or another pre-arranged location in Ulaanbaatar between 9 am and 10 am. Today you fly to the far-western frontier city of Ulgii, seated at the base of the rugged Altai Mountains and along the Khovd River. It is about a 2-hour long noon flight. Although your Ulaanbaatar guide will check you in, you’ll be ‘flying solo’ since you will have a local guide out west who will be waiting to meet you there. Upon arrival in Ulgii, you will check into the hotel, visit the interesting local Aimag museum and take a stroll around this low-rise town – a mix of Soviet-style buildings and traditional clay brick dwellings. You can also take a walk around the town’s bazaar featuring everything from Kazakh skullcaps to ethnic food, to the dombra, a traditional Kazakh two-stringed lute. In the evening enjoy a local dinner at one of our favorites eateries in town.

STEPPE DRIVING – MEETING HERDING FAMILY
After a leisurely breakfast, begin your journey into the wilds of the Mongolian steppe. Board the formidable UAZ for a drive through the ever-changing wilderness scenery, where expansive rocky plains give way to snow-covered vistas, green valleys, river crossings, and the Western Frontier, all against the backdrop of the sharp peaks of the stunning Altai Mountains. Stop for picnic lunch among some stunning scenery. In the afternoon arrive at the winter camp of the herding family we will be migrating with. After introductions, unpacking in the ger, and the customary milk tea, take the opportunity to observe the daily activities of the herding lifestyle, and practice riding horses with skilled nomadic horsemen. Eat traditional Mongolian dinner in the ger and settle in for the night.

WINTER HERDER MIGRATION
Today we begin the epic Winter Migration towards Tavan Bogd National Park with our herder family. We will follow the migration about 25 kilometers each day from the warm comforts of our van. Regular stops will be made for photo opportunities, tea breaks, and lunch along the way. Throughout these five days, we will have the rare opportunity to experience all the different aspects that are a part of the Mongolian herders’ annual migration that is so central to their identity and livelihood. End each will culminate with a homemade dinner in a warm ger.

You will have the opportunity to discover how the eagles are caught, trained, and prepared for hunting, while also you will be able to see them in action. You may also want to do some shopping in town – perhaps at some of the decent craft outlets (Tsagaan Alt felt shop, Quilters, Mary and Martha) or the State Department Store.
