Our camel riding trip
One of the best ways to explore mysteries of Mongolia and its people, and beauty of the nature is to take part in an extraordinary camelriding experience. On our trips you will enjoy riding of two-humped Bactrian camel, camelus bactrianus, which is indigenous to Mongolia. Nomad people have been developed rich traditions to breed and use camels since the domestication period as estimated at least 3500 years ago. Camels provide many of life’s basic necessities of Mongolian society. Camel hair is woven into clothing and blankets, dried camel droppings fuel fires, and nomads consume camel milk and meat with relish, and design shoes and saddles from camel hides. A camel stands about 2 meters (7 feet) tall at the hump and weighs 726 to 816 kilos (1600 to 1800lbs). It can carry at least 200 kilos of goods and walks at five kilometers per hour in its peculiar rolling gait. Unloaded, a camel can outrun a horse. In winter it continues to work through minus twenty degree temperatures. A camel can go nine days without water, 33 days without food. In fact, a thirsty camel can drink as many as 135 liters (30 gallons) of water in about 13 minutes. The humps actually conserve up to 36 kilograms (80lbs) of fat—allowing their hosts to survive when food is scarce. The humps shrink as fat is consumed for energy. Besides its usefulness as a beast of burden, the camel gives five to eight kilos of wool per year, and up to 600 liters of milk a year. The milk is used for making “hoormog”, a kind of alcoholic tonic drink, as well as butter and different kinds of cheeses.
