Central Mongolia

The central Mongolia is part of unique combination where mountains, forest and Gobi-type landscapes are all in one location. This region has many historical sites, natural wonders in Mongolia’s heartland, particularly in the Orkhon River Valley, which contains archaeological remains dating back several centuries.

Gurvanbulag

Location: 290 km west of Ulaanbaatar in the Gurvanbulag soum of Bulgan province

Features: Beautiful natural combination of Forest Mountain, rolling steppe and Gobi landscapes can be found together in this area, belongs to buffer zone of Khognokhaan Mountain Nature reserve.

Ikh tamir

Location: 512 km west of Ulaanbaatar in the Ikhtamir soum of Arkhangai province

Features: The area is surrounded by beautiful forested mountains along Khoid Tamir river and belongs to buffer zone of Khangain Nuruu (Mountain Range) National Park.

Ikh Nart

Location: 300 km southeast of Ulaanbaatar in the Dalanjargalan soum of Dornogobi province

Features: The Nature reserve established in 1996, and covers an area of about 66,000 hectares of grassland and semi-desert steppe environments and harbors one of the last remaining populations of Argali, wild sheep (Ovis ammon) and Siberian ibex (Capra sibirica).

Activities: Exploring Argali sheep and ibex, pray birds, beautiful rock formations and archeological sites while trekking

Choir

Location: 247 km southeast of Ulaanbaatar in the Gobisumber province

Features: This is one of the very interesting and important places of Mongolia due to its rich cultural heritage and great historical value. The Borjigin people who also known as the Golden kin, Golden family or Altan Urag of Chinggis Khan and his successors have been lived in the steppe of Gobisumber and formed distinctive cultural identity of central Mongolian ethnic group. Naturally, the area belongs to the steppe zone, but also contains Gobi type landscape. Altitude is 1000-1200 m (3281-3937 feet) above sea level. Choir town is a halfway between Sainshand and Ulaanbaatar, and was declared a Free Trade Zone.
