Location: 300 km from Ulaanbaatar, in Umnudelger soum of Khentii province.
Features: Baldan Bereeven was established in 1654 and grew to be the second biggest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia in 1776 and home of more 5000 monks (in some documents 8000). The monastery and temple complex were destroyed by the communist regime in 1937 and for over 60 years, it was forbidden to visit and almost forgotten. Now it has been mostly restored and about 10 monks chanting and practicing Buddhism there and gradually becoming popular again.
