Meeting point

Good news! You will be picked up from your hotel, just email us the details. Don't worry if you haven't booked your accommodation in Ulaanbaatar yet, you can send us that later.

On the dust of the desert and mud of the steppe, the Japanese off-road MPV provides comfort and safety for your trip. These 4x4 vehicles are specifically tuned for the rough off-roading that's inevitable when traveling in the wilds of Mongolia. They provide ample space, air conditioning and are well maintained, while offering ample luggage space, seat belts and speed.

At Tour Mongolia we believe that a good guide is essential to the enjoyment of any trip. Your guide will be English speaking and hand picked by us to suit your itinerary and requirements. Each guide is personally briefed on all elements of the trip. You will be sent guide details in the confirmation document prior to your tour.

During your journey you will be staying in yurts and cottages at our hand-picked, characterful ger camps in secluded wilderness locations. Gers and wooden houses are equipped with traditional furniture, stove for heating, have 24h electricity, and most are en-suite. with loos and showers inside.

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

Today you fly to the Gobi Desert. Usually, Dalanzadgad flights depart very early, around 6 am, so your guide will pick you up from your hotel or another pre-arranged Ulaanbaatar location around 4:45 am and will fly with you. After landing, drive to Yol Am – we always advise an early visit to avoid other people, to maximize the chance of seeing wildlife before the heat of the day comes, and for the best light for photography. Park up at the head of the valley and keep a lookout for birds of prey and ibex on top of the rocky outcrops above you as you wander down into the gorge. You will have about an hour for a leisurely walk in the gorge. As you walk down the valley the steep rock faces close in and the stream that crisscrosses the path disappears under sheets of ice – there may not be much ice in the summer months but there should be some. After you have explored the area, drive to the characterful ger camp where you will staying tonight. After lunch and a short rest visit a nomadic homestay nearby where you will have Mongolian have a cooking lesson to learn how to prepare Mongolian dumplings (buuz or huushuur), as well as Mongolian archery practice. Then return to your eco-lodge located near the Gurvansaikhan Gobi National Park and enjoy your first night sleeping in a ger.

Travel details: Flight 1.5hrs; 1hr/50km to Yol Am; 1hr/40km to camp
Accommodation: Deluxe Ensuite Ger – Gobi Mirage Ger Camp
Meals included: Lunch; Dinner

After early breakfast, board the vehicle for a scenic desert drive west to the sand dunes of Khongor Els, stopping for photos. The plan is to take the scenic back route through the Gurvan Saikhan hills and the Dungenir Pass. You will reach the ger camp in time for lunch. You can either go for a walk on the dunes or drive a short distance to visit a camel herding family who spends the summers near the water springs close to the dunes – enjoy the hospitality in their ger where you will be able to try camel milk and other traditional Mongolian fare.

In the afternoon mount a Bactrian for an hour-long camel ride alongside the dunes. Return to the ger camp for dinner and in the evening either return back to the dunes to enjoying a sunset from the desert or enjoy an evening of stargazing under the clear, Gobi sky.

Travel details: 4h/120km to Khongor Els
Accommodation: En-Suite Wooden House – Gobi Erdene Ger Camp
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

After a leisurely breakfast, head back east, stopping at Khavtsgait to explore the petroglyphs. Walk up a rocky outcrop and search the surrounding rocks for ancient engravings that dot the area. You will be surprised by how many there are – one can spend a good half an hour exploring and discovering. From this vantage point, there is a fantastic view over the surrounding plains. Have lunch in the small village of Bulgan – perhaps also visit one of the Gobi’s few organic farms located here – before continuing onto Bayanzag for an exploratory walk around the spectacular sandstone formations, known as the Flaming Cliffs due to their deep red hue. You can either do this en route to the ger camp where you’ll stay tonight, or go to the camp first and then drive to the cliffs a bit later in time to catch the sunset. We advise spending up to an hour and a half strolling around this paleontological wonder and search for dinosaur fossils – both atop the cliffs and down on the valley floor – before hopping back in the vehicles and back to your ger.

Travel details: 5h/150km to Bayanzag via Khavsgait
Accommodation: Deluxe Ensuite Wooden Ger – Gobi Oasis Ger Camp
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

After a morning flight to Ulaanbaatar, head west to Hustai. Have lunch at the ger camp on arrival. There may also be a chance this afternoon to visit a nomadic family and/or do some riding. At dusk, drive from your camp into the park to see the Takhi – this is the time when they gather to drink at streams so you have a better chance of seeing them up close, and in the accessible areas. You may want to combine the trip with a longer walk in the park – in which case you should leave a little earlier. Discuss your preference with your guide. Afterwards head back to camp for dinner.

Travel details: Flight 1.5hrs; 2hrs/110km to Hustai
Accommodation: Standard Ger; Hustai Resort Ger Camp
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Head to the airport for the flight north to Muron where your driver will be waiting for you. Head into town for a look around the market, and for lunch. You can also visit the wine shop and/or the supermarket if you would like any personal provisions. Then drive North to Hatgal – the small village on the southern tip of the lake. Stop on the way to see reindeers and learn more about reindeer herders at a small encampment nearby. You will be staying today in a beautifully located ger camp by the lake’s shore, the views are amazing and there will be a chance to watch abundant birdlife that inhabits the area. In the evening, relax with a drink on the shores overlooking the lake, and tuck into some delicious, home-cooked food.

Travel details: 1.5hrs/100km to Airport; Flight 1.5hrs; 130km/2hrs to Hatgal
Accommodation: Deluxe, En-Suite Wooden House, Ashikhai Ger Camp
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

After breakfast, board the iconic Sukhaabatar ship and sail to a nearby island, climb up on the island’s highest point which is a vantage point from where the view of the lake and surrounding taiga is magnificent. After returning by ship to Hatgal, you will have a chance to go off cycling on trails leading alongside the lake and into the surrounding forests. The previous days will have involved quite a bit of traveling, so you’ll be glad to be out of the vehicle. In the afternoon you will also go off horse riding on trails leading from the camp to a rocky promontory overlooking the vast majestic lake. No horse riding experience is necessary – Mongolian horses are small and we match horses to riders, plus you will have your horse wrangler and guide with you at all times to assist.

Travel details: No long drives today
Accommodation: Deluxe, En-Suite Wooden House, Ashikhai Ger Camp
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

After breakfast drive south to the Delger River. Take a walk (45mins) or drive to see the ancient deerstones at Ushigiin Uver – these are some of the most clear and striking examples of stylized Bronze Age deerstones, and are surrounded by a number Turkic burial mounds. You will be staying in a wonderful rustic camp situated in a stunning location and run by a good friend of ours, Esee, and his wife Moogii. It is often the favorite ger camp of our guests. If you are into fishing, depending on the time of the year (June is best), this is a great place to catch some lenok. The camp has a spinning rod for guests use, or you can bring your own. In the afternoon head down to the river and onto a raft. The wide, shallow, obstacle-free, but fast-flowing river with many twists and turns makes ideal conditions. The speed of the river will depend on the recent rainfall, but the current will be between 5-10km/h so you can cover some decent distance. You can decide how long you want to go for, but we suggest stopping at 5 pm. Your driver will await downstream and will take you back to camp for dinner.

Travel details: 2hrs/120km to Delger River
Accommodation: Standard Ger – Tultiin Tokhoi Ger Camp
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Head to the airport for your flight back to Ulaanbaatar – thankfully it is tarmac all the way. You may want to do some shopping on your return – perhaps at the Gobi Cashmere outlet store on your way back into town, and then also at any of the decent craft outlets. Discuss your preferences with your guide. You will be then dropped at your hotel or a city location of your choice (we can do multiple drop-offs if required).
