FLY TO SOUTH GOBI, WALK ON ICE AT THE YOL VALLEY AND LEARN MONGOLIAN COOKING WITH A NOMADIC FAMILY
Our guide will meet you at your hotel or another location of your choice at 4:45 am and go with you to the airport for an early flight to the Gobi Desert. After arriving in the southern provincial capital of Dalanzadgad head to the Yol Valley, 1 hour (50km) drive from the airport. The vehicle will be left at the gorge’s entrance, from where you will need to venture on foot. Yol Valley is notable for a deep ice field, which is several meters thick by the end of winter and is several kilometers long. In the summer there is usually less ice, but you should still be able to walk on it. The area is also a habitat of ibex and birds of prey and you may be spot wildlife on top of the cliffs. After returning to the vehicle, drive a short distance to visit a nomadic family living nearby, where you will have Mongolian have a cooking lesson to learn how to prepare Buuz (steamed dumplings) or huushuur (fried meat pastry), as well as Mongolian archery practice. Then return to your eco-lodge located near the Gurvansaikhan Gobi National Park and enjoy your first night sleeping in a ger.

Overnight you will stay in a deluxe, ensuite ger in the Gobi Mirage ger camp. Lunch & dinner are included.

TRAVEL TO KHONGOR ELS SAND DUNES AND RIDE A BACTRIAN CAMEL
After breakfast in the camp, board the vehicle and continue your journey deeper into the Gobi Desert to the Khongor Els sand dunes. Keep a lookout for gazelles and birds of prey as you drive – the scenery is beautiful and populated by a plethora of wildlife. You will reach the ger camp in time for lunch. You can then either go for a walk on the dunes or drive a short distance to visit a camel herding family that spends the summers near the water springs close to the dunes – enjoy the hospitality in their ger where you will be able to try camel milk and other traditional Mongolian specialties. In the afternoon go for an hour-long camel ride alongside the dunes. Return to the ger camp for dinner and in the evening either return back to the dunes to see the spectacular a sunset, or enjoy an evening of stargazing under the clear, Gobi sky.

Overnight stay in a deluxe, ensuite ger at the Gobi Erdene ger camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

EXPLORE KHAVSGAIT PETROGLYPHS AND BAYANZAG FLAMING CLIFFS
After breakfast, say goodbye to your hosts and travel off-road to Bayanzag for 5 hours (150km). During the scenic drive, you are likely to see wild gazelles as they run along – it’s difficult for vehicles to catch up with them! On the way, you will stop at an ancient sacred site of Khavtsgait, where on top of a rocky hill there are hundreds of ancient stone engravings, called petroglyphs. Some of them are as old as 3000 BC and were painted by hunters while waiting for prey. The site also offers wonderful views over the desert. Have lunch in a village of Bulgan and soon after you will arrive at Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs. It was here that the first dinosaur eggs were discovered by an American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews, and the area remains one of the most famous paleontological sites in the world. Stroll for an hour or two among the flaming-red cliffs where the dinosaurs once roamed and in the evening travel a short distance to the ger camp where you will stay tonight. Arrive on time for dinner and settle in your ger for your last night in the Gobi.

Overnight you will stay in a deluxe, ensuite wooden ger at the Gobi Oasis ger camp. Breakfast, lunch & dinner are included.

After a morning flight to Ulaanbaatar, head west to Hustai. Have lunch at the ger camp on arrival, then visit the park’s information center to learn about Hustai’s history and the plethora of wild animals that roam the park. Then venture by vehicle into the park to see the wild Takhi horses and track wildlife. You may see wild deer, foxes, and other animals, and there will be plenty of opportunity for photography. Stop on the way to see reindeers and learn more about reindeer herders at a small encampment nearby. You will be staying today in a beautifully located ger camp by the lake’s shore, from where you can take short excursions along the shore on foot or by bicycle, which you can hire from the camp.

After returning by ship to Khatgal, you will have a chance to go off cycling on trails leading alongside the lake and into the surrounding forests. In the afternoon, if you are up for it, go on a hour long horseback ride along the lake’s shores. No horse riding experience is necessary – Mongolian horses are small and we match horses to riders, plus you will have your horse wrangler and guide with you at all times to assist. Alternatively you may want to hire a mountain bike or go for a nature and bird-watching walk. Return to your camp for dinner.
