Meeting point

Good news! You can be picked up from the airport on arrival, just email us your flight details. Don't worry if you haven't booked the flights yet, you can send them to us later.

The vehicle we use on this trip is the formidable off-road UAZ Russian van. Ulgii province is remote and vehicles may not be as new or well-maintained as in other parts of the country, although we do provide the best available. There is a vehicle per every 4-5 guests. There will be no vehicle support whilst walking and riding in Tavanbogd National Park - pack camels will carry all luggage.

At Tour Mongolia we believe that a good guide is essential to the enjoyment of any trip. Your guide will be English speaking and hand picked by us to suit your itinerary and requirements. Each guide is personally briefed on all elements of the trip. You will be sent guide details in the confirmation document prior to your tour.

During your trek you will be camping in our top quality tents and will spend the last night in a ger camp. Tents and rest mats are provided - but you should bring your own sleeping bag. A basic loo and shower tent is erected at each camp site. A cooking/dining tent also accompanies this expedition, in addition to a fantastic cook!

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

OCT 5-6

Your guide and driver will meet you in the arrivals hall at Ulaanbaatar Chinggis Khan Airport. Transfer to the hotel and check into your room. The plan for today is quite flexible, as arrival times will influence things, and you may want some downtime to relax. You may also need to sort out exchanging money and other practical things. For early arrivals, there will be a morning visit to the Gandan Monastery – enter the temples, including that of the Migjid Janraisig with its huge golden Buddha statue. In the old temple complex listen to the chanting ceremonies which happen mid-morning. For others, we suggest meeting your guide in the hotel reception at 14:30 for a leisurely walk across the impressive Sukhbaatar Square to visit the National History Museum with its well-laid out informative displays showcasing the country’s fascinating past. Afterwards, walk south towards the city’s main park, and enjoy an intimate performance of music and dance by the Tumen Ekh ensemble at a small theater. Welcome dinner at one of our favorite Mongolian restaurants rounds off your first day in Mongolia.

Travel details: 45min/12km to Airport to Hotel; Short drives in UB
Accommodation: Twin Room; Ramada Hotel
Meals included: Dinner

After breakfast, meet your guide at the hotel’s lobby at 08:30, hop into the vehicle and journey east to Terelj National Park, stopping quickly en route at the sacred Turtle Rock which you can climb and hike to the nearby Aryabal Meditation Temple set on a hill. The National Park yields some great scenery which makes it a very popular weekend getaway for both locals and tourists alike. However, you will now pass through the main valley to get away from the crowds, and after Terelj village cross over the river – or rather, through the river! A few kilometers further on you will stop at a family’s ger – step inside and experience local hospitality, drink milk tea, and enjoy homemade lunch, while the horses are being prepared outside. Then saddle up for a ride up into the valley towards Jalman Mountain and along the east side of the Saikhan Saridag range of hills. No horse riding experience is necessary – Mongolian horses are small and we match horses to riders – you should be comfortable quickly and your guide will be there to assist. Return to your ger and in the evening enjoy a nomadic feast of khorkhog or similar countryside fare – you can help with food preparation if you wish. In the evening there will be time to socialize with your nomadic hosts over home-made vodka made of fermented mare’s milk, or alternatively for some incredible stargazing of the clear, Mongolian sky.

Travel details: 2h/60km to Terelj
Accommodation: Guest Ger in a nomadic family encampment
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

After breakfast, say goodbye to your hosts and hop on the quality mountain bikes that we took with us from Ulaanbaatar and follow your guide riding in epic locations of the Terelj National park. Riding will be on rather flat dust trail which is suitable for average fitness levels, but if you rather not ride, just stay at the ger and observe nomads herding to families – you can get involved too. After returning, set off for some great off-road vehicle excursion to the remarkable Chinggis Statue complex near Erdene. Once you arrive, climb up inside until you reach the exterior staircase which runs up the mane of the horse to a viewpoint overlooking the Tuul River, Terelj & the hills of Khan Khentii – Chinggis’ homeland. Then, visit the nearby Gyrocopter pad and take a 10-minute flight over the Chinggis Statue and enjoy the panoramic views from above Mongolia. Upon landing back on the ground it’s back to Ulaanbaatar, arrive on time for dinner and settle in your hotel room for the night.

Travel details: 2h/50km to Chinggis Statue; 1.5h/55km to Ulaanbaatar
Accommodation: Twin Room; Ramada Hotel
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Today you fly to the remote Western corner of Mongolia in the Altai mountains. Ninety percent of the population here is Kazakh, Mongolia’s largest ethnic minority. The isolation of the Altai Mountains has preserved the language and traditions of the Kazakhs, who live amongst some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Upon arrival in Ulgii visit the interesting local Aimag museum and take a stroll around this low-rise town – a mix of Soviet-style buildings and traditional clay brick dwellings. You can also take a walk around the town’s market. You will be staying tonight in a guest ger alongside a Kazakh eagle hunter and his family near Ulgii. Enjoy Kazakh hospitality and spend the evening together, learning how they train their birds. There are also many nomadic families who live in this area – including other hunters – and there will be plenty of opportunities to visit them and experience traditional nomadic hospitality and local community life in the next two days.

Travel details: 45min/12km Hotel-Airport; Flight 2hrs
Accommodation: Ger Homestay alongside Eagle Hunter
Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Over these 2 days enjoy the sights and sounds of the annual eagle festival. You will be only a few kilometers from the festival site so those of you who would like to ride there (and/or back) can do so. The celebrations begin with a colorful opening parade on the festival site in the lee of the mountains overlooking the huge rocky plains. The competitions then begin in earnest – eagles and their owners are judged on various qualities, including the ability of the eagle to fly from the top of the adjacent hill down to its owner and also to catch the ‘prey’ (usually a fox skin) that is pulled behind a horse. There are also prizes for the best turned-out bird, and best dressed hunter. In addition to these eagle-related competitions, there are horsemanship competitions, goat carcass tug-o-war, and camel racing. Enjoy lunch each day in a ger at the festival site – huushuur (fried dumplings) are the typical fare at festivals. Return each afternoon, by vehicle or on horseback, to the ger camp near an eagle hunter’s family where you are staying. On Saturday afternoon head to the airport for your flight to Ulaanbaatar at 5:50 pm and after landing, enjoy a farewell meal at one of our favorite restaurants to round off your Mongolian journey.
